A Precious Relationship
It’s a story about Greg Heffley finding himself thrust into a new year and a new school where undersized weaklings share the corridors with kids who are taller, meaner and already shaved. Desperate to prove his maturity, which could be accomplished by going up a grade, Greg was happy to have his not-quite-so-cool sidekick, Rowely, along for the ride. But when Rowley’s star started to rise, Greg tried to use his best friend’s popularity to his own advantage. Recorded in his diary with comic pictures and his very own words, this test of Greg and Rowley’s friendship unfolded with hilarious results.
In the story, the protagonist “Greg Heffley” is an emaciated and naive boy, who was waiting for “ready to be a real man.” He was also an American junior student who was very self-centered. But whenever he was facing a critical moment, he would always come forward to solve problems and crisis. And his best friend “Rowley Jefferson” was the one who was usually made fun of by him and innocent. The plot focused on the relationship between them. Through the hilarious stories the author narrated, Greg had two brothers. The younger called “Manny Heffley” was a kindergarten kid and didn’t talk a lot, but often snitched and framed by him. By contrast, the older called “Frank Heffley” formed a band mainly based on heavy metal.
This is a simple and funny story, and it also made profound principles easy to understand. It mentioned lots of issues and troubles that teenagers might encounter, like “Whether I’m popular in my school,” “Are classmates all friendly?” “With times going by, will I be under more and more pressure?” Maybe we all had dreams in the past, hoping to be a superstar, a hero, stand on top of the world, get special talents, earn someone’s recognition, hold superpowers and so on. Despite too many limits and real factors which made us stop, it was not all. I especially liked a text in the book, “She didn’t try to pry and get all the details. All she said was that I should try to do the right thing, because it’s our choice that makes us who we are.” Maybe we aren’t different from ordinary people, but we all have our own steps, behaviors, and thinking modes to show ourselves. Through an ironic tone, the diary showed frustrations and unique observation Gred had. Resonating with the story, it just not only improved my English ability, but also closed the distance between me and my family. Besides, I knew the American culture more.
