George's Marvelous Medicine
The story is about George and his Grandma. George was alone with his grandma. Most Grandmas were sweet and friendly — but not George’s Grandma! She was nasty, she yelled at George all the time, and she might even be a witch! George felt enough of his grouchy Grandma. He thought the solution might be to replace her regular medicine with some marvelous medicine that he would make out of sorts of ingredients. George’s medicine worked so marvelously well that Grandma — and his family — will never be the same again!
George and Grandma were at home. George’s Grandma bossed him around and bullied him. She was horrid. To punish her for her regular abuse, George decided to make a magic medicine to replace her old one. He collected a variety of ingredients from around the family farm including deodorant and shampoo, floor polish, horseradish sauce and gin, animal medicine, and so on. After cooking the ingredients, George gave it to his Grandma, who grew as tall as the house. George’s father was excited about the medicine. He had George feed the medicine on the rest of the farm's animals. George attempted to recreate it, but was unable to remember all the ingredients. The second medicine made a chicken's legs grow extremely long, and the third elongated a chicken's neck to bizarre proportions. George’s Grandma drank the forth medicine. She became smaller and smaller and then disappeared. George reflected on the recent events, feeling as though they had granted him an access to the edge of a magic world.
I think George was courageous. He made the medicine with a lot of strange ingredients. His Grandma ate it and became extremely tall without diarrhea. And I think George’s father was open-minded. He didn’t blame George. He invited George to make the medicine again. In a word, I think the story was creative and special.

In the late nineteenth century, there was a murderer called Jack the Ripper who killed many a woman in London. Because of the investigation, Watson realized some secrets of Holmes. And there was a person called Michael Dibdin who wanted to tell us to know Holmes. He wrote this book in an objective and positive way.
Sherlock Holmes, a famous and professional detective in London. He felt bored and used excessive cocaine recently. Because he thought the cases were too easy to him. There was no case which could attract him to solve it. One day, a new murderer called Jack the Ripper showed up in London and killed the woman who was not special. Holmes felt very excited about this case. Thus, he started to investigate with Watson immediately. But several months later, they didn’t catch up the murderer and Holmes became stranger and stranger. He said it was a person who always chased behind him, and he also said the murderer lived in the house which was across from him. After this, Waston realized that Holmes killed a woman in the way which was the same as the way that “Jack the Ripper” in an action of chasing the murderer. Watson couldn’t believe it absolutely. One day, Holmes came to his house and asked Waston to help him fight against the murderer who was chasing behind him. Watson decided to tell Holmes the truth and they took a trip to the waterfall. At first, Holmes listened to the truth. He thought that was a person who was chasing him, killed his partner, and tried to cheat him. Because of it, he wanted to kill Waston. After Watson's explanation, Holmes believed him and jumped down off the fall. Sherlock Holmes died in the end of the story.
When I read this story, I thought the author described the plot lively, especially the part which described Holmes killed the woman. I could imagine this part in my mind. After reading the story, I knew more about Holmes. In the past, I thought Holmes was a good person. But now I knew everything could go wrong if with excessive cocaine.

A Little Princess
In the story “A Little Princess,” it talked about a little girl who was called Sara Crewe. The story began in a cold winter and a school with rich girls in London. Sara was a rich girl, the richest girl in the school. But things went worse when her father died in a bad fever, and all his money was taken by his friend but his friend ran away from her.
Because of it, Sara had no money to support her in the school. She became a poor servant girl and worked sixteen hours a day. But she was not overwhelmed by the dilemma. She had two true friends. One was Becky, a poor servant girl, too. The other was a rich girl, Ermie. Sara went through two years in an attic until she met his father’s friend, Mr. Carmichael. Mr. Carmichael looked for Sara for a long time. When he knew Sara was Mr. Crewe’s daughter, he was surprised. And he brought Sara out of school with Becky. It was a happy ending in the end.
In the story, I liked a sentence most. “A princess is always brave, so I must be, too,” said Sara. She encouraged herself and kept working. When we are trapped in something, I want to use the sentence to encourage myself. Maybe not everyone can be like Sara. She was not overwhelmed by the dilemma and kept working to make her life better. Many people in the world are like her but more people are overwhelmed by the dilemma. It is critical to encourage ourselves by making a better life for us.

Who killed Molly?
“Love or Money?” is telling a story in Cambridge, July 1379. Molly was killed by putting lots of sleeping tablets in her hot milk. But nobody knew who did. Finally, the cop Walsh found the killer. And I thought the author Rowena Akinyemi wanted to write a suspense story to convey about love or money, which would make people blind. I think the book is written for everyone, and the tone is subjective. Because she just talks about humanity without any evidence.
The story is talking about family. A woman, Molly, was very rich. Everyone wanted her money because of different reasons, but Molly didn’t want to pay anyone, and in the next morning she was killed. It was a murder case. The police Walsh heard every testimony and through lots of identifications found the murderer was Jackie. Molly’s daughter, Jackie killed her, because Molly didn’t allow her to be with Tom Briggs.
I think maybe love and money will fool people, which even kill people. It is not only being stupid, but also a tragedy.

Crime Stories
The book “Sister Love and Other Crime Stories” is about that in any time and any place, someone we don’t know will commit a crime because of different reasons. The author, John Escott, had an interest in crime stories. He wanted to write one and show it to everyone. The book suits everyone who loves crime stories, and the book’s tone is subjective, because the author just told what he imagined.
The book talks about three stories. First, one is telling two sisters’ fight. Marcia was an elder sister, and she had lots of things to do. One day she met Howard, but her little sister Karia got her boyfriend, so Macia killed her. The second one is telling a man, Joey. He had nothing, but he wanted to eat and find somewhere to live, so he got money by crime. He committed a crime successfully. But in the last time, he decided to go to New York to start a new life, but he died by accident. The last story is telling a woman named Rosa. She had a job, but she didn’t make much money. So, she asked people who became drunk and drove to give her some hush money, but one day she was caught. She ended up escaping too fast that she got hit.
I think the stories were interesting, but I did not think a crime is a right thing. People shouldn’t commit a crime even if they have a bad mood or some reasons.

Strong Love
In the nineteenth century, there was a tale about the ghost living in the Opera House. Jennifer Bassett, who wanted the people to know this story, wrote a story about this tale in an objective and positive way.
The Phantom, who was very ugly and looked like a ghost, lived in the underground in the Opera House. Owing to his appearance, he seldom showed up in front of anyone. He controlled the Opera House with letters or his voice everywhere. Moreover, he had a student, Christine, and he loved her very much. Because of a chance, everyone in Paris knew Christine’s voice and loved it very much. And Raoal, who met Christine before and also loved her, did, too. At first, Christine rejected all the invitation from Raou, because she was scared of the Phantom. In addition, she didn't want anyone to know that her teacher was the Phantom. But Christine finally gave up to keep these secrets. She told Raoul the whole story between her and the Phantom, and she was also determined to fall in love with Raoul. However, the Phantom realized their action. He was pretty angry. One day, he took Christine to his house during the opera. Raoul realized it and rushed into her restroom to find her immediately. With another person’s help, he discovered the secret passway to the Phantom’s house to save her. The phantom had already discovered their fiction; therefore, he did some tricks to make them feel uncomfortable. In the end, thanks to the strong love between Christine and Raoul and the Phantom’s kindness, they lived a happy life in another country.
In my opinion, although there were many different versions of this story, I loved this version the most. In this book, the author described the plot lively. And this could make me imagine the pictures in my mind. Furthermore, in the end of this story, the author didn’t tell the ending of Christine and Raoul. It was a good idea, because there would be different endings when people read it in different moods. With an open ending, the readers could have their own ending in their mind.

Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son
“Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son” was created by Sir Arthur Sonan Doyle. For Sir Arthur Sonan Doyle, writing fiction was not only the tool which could make money, but also a chance to tell that the good would always prevail over the evil. Just like Sherlock Holmes, he was always able to solve the mystery and dig out the truth; however, sometimes Sherlock Holmes would not bring the criminal to the police, because he thought it would be much better for everyone. This story describes a kidnapping, and the detective, Sherlock Holmes, who would solve the mystery.
Dr. Huxtable had a school for boys in the north of England. When Duke of Holderness decided to send his young son there, that was a piece of good news for the school, because the Duke was a very important person, and he was willing to let him son go there for study. But just two years later, Dr. Huxtable found the Duke’s son, Arthur, disappeared. He thought there was someone who had kidnapped him, so Dr. Huxtable turned to the famous detective Sherlock Holmes for help. Later, Sherlock Holmes discovered a strange thing. Arthur went freely on that day, and it meant that Arthur was willing to go with the kidnapper. After deeply dredging up the truth, Sherlock Holmes suspected the Duke was the person who kidnapped Arthur. But why did a father kidnap his son? Sherlock Holmes told all the process of complicated reasoning to the Duke. Finally, the Duke told a surprising news to everyone. The kidnapper actually was James, the Duke’s secretary and also the Duke’s son, but nobody knew James was the Duke’s son, because a government minister couldn't tell the world about an illegitimate child. James was jealous of all the things which Arthur had. As a result, he planned to kidnap Arthur on that day. After the Duke knew it, the Duke had no choice but keep Arthur disappeared. In the end, Sherlock Holmes didn't bring James to justice. He let James go to Australia as fast as he could.
Having once started reading this fiction, I was completely immersed in the mysterious story, and I admired Sherlock Holmes so much. He was not only the observant but also a person with a large amount of knowledge. For example, he could infer that Arthur recognized the kidnapper, only according to what Arthur was dressed in and the footprints on the ground under the window. It was so amazing that I couldn't stop reading it.

The Speckled Band
“The Speckled Band” is a story about a lady, Helen Stoner, who was worried sick about herself. She thought there was someone wanting to kill her for the large fortune which she would inherit from her mom, so she recruited Sherlock Holmes to find out the person. I think the writer may once be framed by his close relatives for the heritage so he wanted to warn people that we should always be aware of our surroundings, just like Helen Stoner, so she could prevent herself from getting into trouble or danger.
One night, a young lady knocked the door of Sherlock Holmes’s door. She was shaking with fear and said, “Help me!” Then, the lady told a scary story to Holmes. The woman who was named Helen lived with her stepfather, Roylott, and her sister, Julia. One day, when hearing the whistle, Julia ran into her bedroom hastily and said, “I’m afraid, afraid of the speckled band!” Then, Julia died immediately. Two days ago, Helen heard the whistle again. She thought somebody wanted to kill her, because she would be married soon and had the control of the heritage, so the person needed to kill her to get the money. After listening to Helen’s story, Holmes decided to stay at Julia’s bedroom to wait for the criminal who had murdered Julia and attempted to kill Helen. In the middle of the night, Holmes saw a poisonous snake and attacked it, so the snake went back to Roylotty’s room through the air-vent and bit Roylott by accident. Finally, Holmes knew the answer. It was clear that the snake belonged to her stepfather. The criminal was actually Roylott, because he didn't want to give the money to Helen and Julia after they got married. He tried to kill them with the snake.
In this story, Sherlock Holmes impressed me so much. He was not only an intelligent detective but also a brave man. When Holmes saw a snake which tried to bite him and knew the criminal must be around the house, he didn't run away immediately, but wanted to find out the criminal to save Helen's life. I think I could never be such a courageous person like Holmes, and I would respect him all the time, even though Holmes was an imaginary character.

The story is about transporting drugs. I think the writer was requested to do something illegal. He wanted to tell people that it was dangerous to agree with others easily to do something. He wanted to warn people who didn’t have the consciousness of danger to be careful.
The leading roles helped a man drive his truck to deliver goods. But they didn't know the drunk not only deliver goods but also transported drugs. Luckily, the leading roles found it wrong when they were eating sandwiches in a restaurant. In the end they fought with droplets and finally overpowered them. Sooner, the police came and arrested the droplets.
I think the leading roles were brave. They weren't afraid of the droplets and weapons. The girl hit the criminal and got the gun. I wish I could also be a brave girl as the character.

Sally’s Phone
Sally is a woman who had a boyfriend. Her boyfriend always made her to do something. I think the writer had a terrible experience of relationship, so she wrote the story. She wanted to remind people who have difficulty in his/her relationship not to be stubborn. The writer might be a liberal-minded guy and he wanted to tell young people his experience.
The story tell us that we should treasure our relationship. It's a story about a woman, Sally, who started a new relationship from her smartphone. In the beginning her boyfriend always made her do something she couldn't or she didn't want to do. What her boyfriend did made Sally feel bad. In an accident, Sally’s phone changed with a strange man who was truly polite. The man soon caught Sally’s eyes. In the end, Sally and the man went to a party together.
I think the story is nearly impossible. When Sally and the man changed their phone, their friends exactly called them both. The story only suits children. They will not think too much about the circumstances, just like that the prince and princess always have a happy ending.

People Don’t Always Need Words
On the train to St. Austell, Julie, a girl with green eyes, and her husband, Bill, were going to have their first holiday. While Bill was busy talking to the man in a brown hat about his life story, Julie felt nothing but bored. So she started to observe the tall man in expensive outfits , and the book as well as the newspaper he read. She was so into him that she decided to leave her husband and the boring trip behind and went away with the mysterious tall man.
At first, Julit sat next to Bill, who kept chatting with the man in a brown hat. She felt so bored! The destination, St. Austell, doesn’t even the place she wanted to go. She thought of many cities she would like to visit. And then, the tall man who sat across her grab an Italy guidebook out from his bag. Julie couldn’t help but start reading the title while her husband and the man in a brown hat went to a restaurant to grab some food julie knew she was attracted ny the tall man, so she went away with the tall man and left her husband the boring trip to St. Austell without saying goodbye.
I appreciate what Julie did but I don’t think it’s right. After all, she had a husband who loved her very much, but she just went off. That’s very irresponsible and childish. Although that hurt Bill’s feeling and left him nothing but shocked, what can we possibly judge Julie if she was really in love with the mysterious tall man? When Bill learned that the tall man even waited for Julie, he was stunned, and said ”But he read his newspaper all the time. He didn’t talk to Julie. And she never talked to him. They didn’t say a word.” There’s a passenger on the train on the train heard the whole story and told Bill, “people don’t always need words.” So, I guess Bill will have an “unforgettable” trip during the time he went to St. Austell on the vacation.

TITLE: Hector and the search for happiness
AUTHOR: Francois Lelord
YEAR: 2014

ISBN: 9780143126744
Key To Happiness
Hector was unsatisfied with himself even though he owned more money and social status than normal people, so he decided to go on a journey. From France to China to Africa to US, he tried hard and had lots of conversations about what made people happy.
In the story there were 23 lessons that Hector wrote down during the whole journey. I especially love lesson 3: “Many people see happiness only in the future.” To demonstrate this point, the author let Hector met an old friend who worked in China as a businessman. This person made and saved lots of money the same way as his colleagues did. Because they wanted to retire early so that they could have happiness by spending their money on traveling and so on. But the truth was that they were extremely unhappy right at the moment because all they did was work, work, and work. They didn’t have time for a lover, an interest, nor a family.
I think happiness is about enjoying the moment, instead of being unhappy at the moment but enjoying happiness afterwards. There’re always great views and kind people around along the way. We don’t have to wait until the end or until we have lots of money to earn the rights to be happy. Take my case for example. Now I have to study hard so I can go to the university I want to go . There’ll be happiness when I accomplish my goals, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have happiness during the way. Maybe few hours of TV can be cut, and I have to put more time as well as energy into study, but these factors can’t block the way between me and my own happiness. Having dinner with my parents is a kind of happiness, humming a song I like on the way to school is a kind of happiness, enjoying a  nice cup of latte is a kind of happiness. The simple happiness doesn’t have to wait until I reach my goals. I can enjoy them whenever I want.
Hence, I agree with the author, because he clearly doesn’t like the whole concept of “having happiness in the future.” And I like the way I demonstrate this point because I know that there is a lot of happiness around me as long as I’m willing to find it.

The Witches
The boy was turned into a mouse by The Grand High Witch because he knew everything about Formula 86 Delayed Action Mouse-Maker. He and his grandma made an excellent plan to deal with the witches. The boy’s grandma is a retired witchophile who studied witches and knew a lot about them. She always told her grandson how to recognize a witch. First, witches had thin curvy claws, so they wore the gloves to hide them. Second, they were all bald as a boiled egg, so they wore wigs. And wearing wigs did cause a rather serious problem for them. They had to put them straight on to their naked scalp. It will be very rough and scratchy, and the witches called it wig-rash. Third, nose-holes. They had a slightly larger nose-holes than ordinary people. Their special nose-holes were for smelling out a child from far away. And that was why his grandma told him to have a bath once a month. Forth, witches never had toes. They just had feet, so they had the most awful job to squeeze their feet into those neat little pointed shoes. Last, their spit was blue as ink, so they even used it to write. His grandma had a pneumonia because she used to smoke cigars. And they decided to go to Hotel Magnificent which was a nice place for them to rest. One day in the hotel, the boy came to “The Ballroom”, where RSPCC Meeting was held. He was fascinated by these hair –scratching ladies first. Then he found out it was Annual Meeting for witches. Sadly, he was turned into a mouse by using Mouse-Maker. Therefore he ran to his own room to tell his grandma everything. Then they decided to put some drops of Mouse-Maker in witches’ supper. They did it successfully but the boy was still a mouse.
The fiction made me nervous. I really wanted to live in that fiction’s world because his grandma said it was a bad habit for children to take a bath. I can’t agree it more. And on Page 57, it said, ” It is always funny when you catch someone doing something coarse and she thinks no one is looking. Nose-picking, for example, or scratching her bottom.” That was totally what I thought. Some of my classmates often did those things. It was really disgusting but funny. And in the fiction, the author wanted to express that The Grand High Witch had trouble pronouncing the letter w and the letter r, so he wrote the word she said in a different way. I thought the author made a mistake first, but after I knew the reason, I still had trouble reading it. Also, “She does it in order to keep the rest of them on their toes.” “But they don’t have any toes, Grandma.” The sentences really gave me a knowing smile.

Matilda
Matilda’s father was a clunning car dealer. He fiddled the number on the speedometer back to cheat his customers. Her parents didn’t like Matilda, so when her teacher told them Matilda was an extraordinary genius, they didn’t care at all. With her rage and sadness, Matilda decided to take revenge on her parents by mischief. Later, when it was her time for school, her headmistress was a sinewy woman. Miss Trunchbull hated the kids so much that she always threw and wobbled the pupil she didn’t like. Everyone in school were scared of her including the teacher. On one occasion, Miss Honey went home with Matilda, and they had a long talk, Miss Honey told Matilda her childhood, and how Miss Trunchbull had treated her. In the end, Matilda used her magic to help her teacher and live together.
Matilda practiced a lot at home in order to help her teacher, so when Miss Trunchbull got into her classroom, she used her magic to make the chalk write on the blackboard by itself. The thing that the chalk wrote about was asking Miss Trunchbull to give Miss Honey back her house. The tone was really like Miss Honey’s father who had been dead. Miss Trunchbull was so frightened that she ran away. At the same time, Matilda’s parents had to leave for Spain to escape from the police. Matilda didn’t want to go with her parents, so Miss Honey asked her parents whether she could take care of Matilda. Because her parents didn’t care about her, they agreed. Then, Matilda could live with her teacher forever.
I do really love this story and the author, I have already read four books of the author. The plot of the story is very dramatic and it was hard to predict. The author gave every character a distinct image. Sometimes the author used puns in the story, and they were very hard for me to understand. And the way how the author described a character was very interesting. For example, the author wanted to describe that the cook was very old. He wrote that she looked as though her mouth was full of lemon juice. After reading the book, I really envied Matilda’s ability. If I have an ability just like her, I would read a lot and use my ability to help many people in the world. Though it is impossible, I will still try my best to learn, and use what I learn to contribute.
